A VISIT TO THE DEVON GREAT CONSULS TRAMWAY
Walk over part of the former Devon Great Consuls Tramway led by Mr. J. Clark. A party of 15 members enjoyed a very informative and enjoyable walk in perfect weather over part of the line, from the former underbridge on the Gulworthy-Gunnislake road to the terminus at Wheal Anna Maria. Opened in 1859, this standard gauge steam worked line ran from the top of the inclined plain from Morwellham Quay to the former Devon Great Consuls Mine. Closed in 1899 and demolished in 1903, the Northern part - which was most of the evening walk - from Bedford Consols to Anna Maria was re-opened as a narrow gauge line in the 1920's and lasted until about 1935. The track bed has recently been restored as a heritage walk, the last section only opening the Wednesday before the walk. We explored the Northern section, the junction and formation of the Bedford Conlsols Siding, the former loop at Wheal Emma and on to the former terminus. Stops were made along the way to observe a few other features. An excellent evening out, well researched by Mr. Clark and everyone completed the 5 miles - two and a half each way-without any problems.
Picture: the newly restored former line between Bedford Consols and Wheal Emma, just imagine what the train would have looked like here in the evening sunshine, Bernard Mills.

2011 SEASON MEMBER'S EVENING
The Indoor Season closed with the traditional members evening. The first part was a presentation by Steve Andrews of the Classic Traction DVD "Great Western Dawn", featuring a tribute the GWR in its 175th Anniversary Year. Plenty of action of the main line including the Torbay Express, the Heritage Railways such as the West Somerset, South Devon and some superb winter light on the Bodmin and Wenford also featured.
Paul Maycock then presnted a selection of digitally scanned slides of the BR diesel scene of the late 1980's-early 90's era. Plenty of BR blue and a wide ranging look at classes such as 31's, Peaks, 56's etc all over the Country. The evening concluded with Richard Green presenting a superb selection of colour slides under the title Rail UK 1987. With an emphasis on signalling, a wide ranging tour of the then BR Network showing how much has changed. The latter two presentations were of the highest standard and just shows what the Members have in their lockers.

THE CLASSIC TRACTION COLLECTION by Steve Andrews
Steve Andrews presented a showing of a couple of DVD's from the Classic Traction Collection, a now well established and still growing producer of quality productions - see the Classic Traction web site.
The first half of the evening was devoted to Main line Steam Memories 2005-2010 with some superb footage shot all over the National Network. Of particular interest were the recent memories of the main line railtours in our immediate area with for example some wonderful scenes on Hemerdon Bank, with all sorts of combinations like a King and Tornado, and a Castle with an A4.
The second part of the evening brought us bang up to date with "The Missing Link" featuring the Welsh Highland Railway and the new section opened this year, with some superb pictures of 30190 "Lyn" on a recent photo charter. If you missed the evening, suggest you purchase the DVD's as they are highly recommended.

FROM EXETER TO THE ATLANTIC COAST by Bernard Mills.
Starting at the former Exmouth Junction Shed, we were taken on a train journey from Exeter to Okehampton, a look at the present day Dartmoor Railway, Meldon Viaduct, with and without trains, and then proceeded to that rural Clapham Junction in the Devonshire countryside known as Halwill Junction. We were taken for a journey over the lines to Padstow, Torrington and Bude, all long since gone and fondly remembered by many. A very nostalgic evening.

A capacity crowd filled St. Edwards Church Hall forthe visit of the well known and renowned West Country Photogrpaher Peter Gray, who presented a very nostagic slide show on South Devon in the Days of Steam. With some diesel shots added for good measure, we were taken along the former GWR Exeter to Plymouth main line, and the Kingswear Branch with visits to the Teign Valley, Moretonhampstead, Ashburton and Kingsbridge lines on the way. Auto trains at long lost places such as Ide and Lustleigh, Prairie tanks at Pullabrook and Gara Bridge, the full 14 coach doubled headed Cornish Riviera climbing away from Totnes examples of an era long since gone and fondly remembered by many. Then there were the Buckfastleigh Sunday School Specials to Teignmouth, milk trains, parcel trains, an all night vigil at Newton Abbot in July 1961. So much nostalgia so well presented with superb colour slides made for a very memorable evening.

World Steam Cine by Terry Nicholls. A superb evening of real - not digital cine at £14 a reel for 3 minutes footage - of Steam. The first film featured memories of Turkey in October 1984 with the lines to Burdur,Isparta and Egridi- with the famous viaduct at the latter being especially memorable. Locos featured were Prussian G8's and G10's, Kriegloks with Henshall 2-8-2's with 2-10-2's on passengers trains.
The second and final films were of China in 1992, featuring Hexipu,Pinkouxia Gorge, main line between Zhongwei and Lanzhou, the line near the North Korean Border from Hunjang to Ponghua with the smaller JS 2-8-2's but laying snow on the ground. As in previous locations, the QJ 2-10-2's featured in what can only be described as breath taking footage of the Menjaiwan Incline, on the edge of the Gobi desert with the odd sandstorm! Filming was done in temperatures of MINUS 15 to 25 causing the film to be very brittle. The last film featured GW 1985 Celebrations Bristol to Plymouth and 7029 to Truro. Some wonderful local memories which all contributed to a superb evening's entertainment.

Robert Crawley ably assisted by Andy Richings came along to present what will probably be regarded as one of the best meetings for a long time. Under the title "West Country rail and bus in the 1950's" we were treated to a tour of the West Country in August 1952 by an unknown photographer who photographed trains and buses in superb 35 mill black and white. Part one was the trains, a figure of 8 of the west country: Launceston, Wadebridge, Penzance, Plymouth, Exeter - particularly memorable the early SR Diesel 10201 on the 1300 Waterloo at Exeter Central. Thence to Dorset, and after the break the tour again but this time with the buses of the day, and this caused as much - if not more - interest than the superb railway collection. The old views of Plymouth with scenes - and buses - familiar to many. A wonderful evening. The collection is part of the collection of The West Country Historic Omnibus Transport Trust, and a visit to their web site at www.busmuseum.org.uk is recommended.

Alan Pike made a welcome return to present a fascinating selection of pictures of Swiss Railways from the past 35 years, showing how the scene has changed so dramatically in the past 10 years, with wholesale replacement of vintage stock, and the amalgamation of large numbers of small lines into regional transport groups with common stock and liveries. The show took a very appreciative audience on a whistle stop tour of the entire country in every season of the year, with a gastronomic guide to the best cafes and bars included!!

The New Year got off to a flying start with a fine evening of brain teasing and a superb digital display of pictures from Steve Andrews. This was of course the Annual Quiz which contained various posers re idetifying scenes past and present, when was 30120 built, questions about Class 56's and other diesel types. The questions covered the whole spectrum of our hobby. One of them is displayed here - can you identify the location and the winning team did manage to get it right. A total of 126 points was available, The winning team captained by Bernard Mills
scored a creditable 78.5, The Committee Team captained by Lou Watkins - and the winners for the last 3 years - were pipped into 2nd place on 75.5.points. Third came Colin Lang's team with 46 and 4th was Adrian "Dutchy" with 39. A thoroughly entertaining evening. THE 45TH MILLS' RAILWAY YEAR: 2010
The Plymouth Railway Circle once again welcomed back our old friend Bernard Mills, who for the 45th year running gave his ever popular Christmass show which reflects upon images taken through the Mills' lens - I use the plural version, for both Audrey's & Bernard's stunning images featured! The hall was packed as usual, as we reflected on what a truly wonderful year 2010 has been. Starting as always, with steam on the Bodmin & Wenford and South Devon Railways, we moved quickly on to see 'Britannias' over Shap and the S & C, to the diesel galas of the West Somerset, where we saw double-headed 'Westerns,' 'Warships' and 'Hymeks,' to D1015 on her ill-fated adventure to Carlisle. We saw new locations a plenty, (a rare feature in this day and age), as Bernard showed iconic locations once more such as Drawood & Largin Viaduct. We finished by looking at such things as 9466 and the Looe steam workings! Does it get any better than this? Well, turn up in 2011 for Bernard's 46th year and we'll all find out!! Don't forget - many of Bernard's fascinating and iconic images can now be purchased on-line through the Classic Traction Images website at: www.classictractionimages.weebly.com.

Amyas Crump presented a wonderful selection of slides from his acquired collection under the heading "The Southern East of Exeter". This was a trip from Kent to Cornwall , mostly in the 1960's featuring slides from rare locations and branch lines from Sharnal Street, Alhallows on Sea, The Westerham Branch, Hawkhurst Branch, Midhurst, Brighton, Eastleigh, Southampton and the Isle of Wight, Weymouth, Yeovil and down the main line to Exmouth Junction Shed and Exeter Central. A great evening of Southern nostalgia, and a reminder of just how much has been lost.

For this year only, the PRC held two photographic compititions, with the annual spring slot making way for the new November date. This year, the competition was varied, and despite several familiar photographers not entering this year, the standard of images was again very high resulting in a good and challenging competition! The PRC are grateful to the Ivybridge Camera Club, who judged our images on this occasion and the highly constructive feedback that was given to the Circle as a whole. The evening concluded with the PRC viewing Classic Traction's latest DVD release, The Southern returns to North Cornwall, (copies of which can be purchased through this site or by visiting the Classic Traction website at www.classictractioncollection.weebly.com ), which illustrated LSWR T9 'Greyhound' 30120's return to traffic on the Bodmin & Wenford. A thoroughly entertaining evening, which was enjoyed by all, and our thanks go once again to the Ivybridge Camera Club. Report given by Steve Andrews.

DIGITAL DECADES - A LOOK BACK AT 40 YEARS OF RAILWAY PHOTOGRAPHY by Brian Aston.
The Plymouth Railway Circle once again welcomed back our old friend, Brian Aston, who gave us a thoroughly entertaining evening in his own unique style. This was the first time that Brian had given the Circle a digital presentation, and the subject was 40 years through his camera lens via both film / slide and digital formats, from Brian's early colour slides in the mid 1970s to the present. Brian shew us some purely stunning images from the BR blue period of class 50s and 'Westerns' in Cornwall, to preservation, right up to electric traction. Brian's enthusiasm for his beloved Bodmin & Wenford certainly shone through, and we were treated to some wonderful images of the 1874 built Beattie well tanks. Brian also treated us to musical accompanyment to some of his images - a show that will endure in all our memories for a long time!

RAILWAY LIVERIES IN THE POST NATIONALISATION PERIOD
by Steve Andrews of Classic Traction:
The Plymouth Railway Circle welcomed Steve Andrews of Classic Traction who gave us a wonderfully entertaining evening as we went on a visual journey of all the colours of the rainbow from 1950 to 2000. Starting in the post Nationalised period, Steve covered the 1948 colour schemes of BR apple green, early lined blue and brunswick green, and on to the established BR steam era liveries of BR unlined & lined black and green, before investigating the diesel era. From Arriva, ARC, to BR maroon, desert sand, golden ochre, chromatic blue, green, rail blue, large logo, railfreight, Hogwarts Railways red (!), to seven, yes seven!, variants of Great Western Trains / First Great Western livery, to Wessex Trains, we were treated in all to 106 different colour schemes and liveries which all came from the Classic Traction archives, more images of which can be found at: www.classictractionimages.weebly.com - a thoroughly entertaining evening, and we look forward to seeing more images from Steve and the Classic Traction files in the new year!

THE PLYMOUTH RAILWAY CIRCLE ARCHIVE by Dr Jeremy Clark
The Plymouth Railway Circle is fortunate to be custodians of a wide variety of photographic material, negatives as well as slides. Unfortunately, due to the PRC's nature, member's have seldom been given the opportunity to see this fascinating collection, from a variety of photographers, who have bequeathed their collections over the years. We were treated to a fascinating talk by Jeremy, who displayed many images (of the collection) never before seen by the PRC, including 'Warships,' 'Westerns' and 'Peaks' at Laira, including a class 31 on test, during 1971 - 1972. A fascinating talk, which is to be followed up by a further selection of images at the member's slide evening in May 2011, hosted by our old friend, Bernard Mills.

THE RAILWAYS OF GERMANY by Richard Green
The Plymouth Railway Circle returned for its new year with a talk by one of our own members, Richard Green, on the Railways of Germany. Richard has, what can only be described as a universal knowledge of foreign railways, and during the course of the evening, we were taken on a wonderful tour of the variety of railways and motive power that can be seen in Germany, a country that is often overlooked by British enthusiasts. We were treated to a diverse range of steam, diesel and electric power, in combination with investigating main and secondary lines, as well as branch lines, resulted in a very entertaining evening. A wonderful way for the Circle to begin its 2010-2011 year, and we thank Richard for beginning our new term in such fine style!
